Heroics

March 22, 2012 5 comments

Last night was the first night of the newly revamped groups. By newly revamped I mean a couple people switched from one group to another. So, I had fun! Let’s recap!

The group had 4 healers, perfect for H Morchok. Not so perfect for anything else. BUT at least Anim does good shadow damage! (now if only he had a few enchants..ahem!).

Don’t worry Anim, I pick on everyone.

Anyway, speaking of picking on people…ohai Tsorb.

Heroic Morchok.

Try 1

-split-
-Right side takes oodles of damage and I’m all wtfbbq!-

Reluu: Tsorb you’re on the wrong side!
Me: AHHH!! Tsorb COME BACK!!
Tsorb: Oops I thought I was on the left side.

Morgish goes splat-
-Left side goes splat-

Crix: Wipe it

Try 2

-split-

-Tsorb goes to the right side this time-
-la la la pewpewew-
-about 10% left in boss, we hear 2 people sign off vent-
-Crystal Spawns-
-Stomp-
Truffle and Freggos go splat-
-Truffle goes offline-
-Freggos goes offline-

Truffle (back in vent): Sorry guys our power went out

Try 3 – A series of unfortunate events cause us to wipe at 500k left.

Try 4 – Win

We then go on to kill normal pingpong and then clear ooze trash. The following takes place in the healer channel:

Reluu: I’m bored
Me: You’re 2 healing the rest of the night. Meow!
Reluu: (goes into Star Panic Mode) Wha?? AHHH!!!!
Me: You’ll be fine.

I switch to kitty spec… put on kitty gear and get “inventory is full”. Dammit for having main hand/offhand in resto and a staff in feral!!

-readycheck-

Me: Waiiittt… opens GB, drops in some green gems and essences.
Me: There, ready
Reluu: Are you sure Aly?
Me: Yes…
Reluu: You still have your resto gear on
Me: Dammit! Waiiiiit!

-feral gear activate-

Me: NOW I’m ready!

Geesh… I make one derp move and everyone’s inspecting me to make sure I have the right gear on. Not like I would do THAT again..

o wait…

So we dispatch of Mister Ooze Boss quickly. Anim is lamenting about his dps (which wasn’t bad!) and someone says in vent:

Freggos to Crix (I think): You were getting out dps’d by a healer
Me: Ahem, you were getting out dps’d by TWO healers

In the end the 2 healers (me and Anim) didn’t really out dps anyone but it was still fun to watch. So we get to Hagara.

Tsorb: We’re 2 healing this too??
Me: Yup! She’s easysauce. I heard you fools were bored.

After Hagara dies, we get to Ultraxion with about 15 mins left of raid time.

Me: So are we going with the conventional 2 healer method or are we going to be true masochists?
Crix: We don’t have a lot of time so let’s just 2 heal it and learn the fight
Me: Meow!

First couple of H Ultrax attempts: A few button fails and we realize ret pallies aren’t the best HoT soakers. Sorry Dannan :(.

-Crix goes splat-

Crix: ONE SECOND Fading Light timer? How is that even fair??

(all i heard was QQ QQ QQ waaaaahhhhhhhhh!)

Finally we all figure it out.. we get to about 5:37 and Reluu and Tsorb are in a complete state of ZOMGWTFBBQ trying to keep up heals. There was 20% left still. No bueno. If they HAD managed to heal through that kind of damage we would have hit the hard enrage.

For the record, Blizzard must have had a pure hatred for cats and rogues when designing that encounter. I can’t shred??!! Not cool, Blizzard. Not cool. AT least you could have stuck him in a hole in the middle of the floor or something. Throw us a bone.

Anyway, 15% buff next week. We might get a little bit closer next time. Rawr.

Don’t Try This at Home. Your Raid Leader Will Hurt You.

March 19, 2012 2 comments

This is what happens when you go feral dps and forget to change out of your resto gear. This is the Hagara fight, and we were 2 healing it. The bottom 2 on  this graph are the healers. The 3rd from the bottom is yours truly with a whopping 4646 dps. That’s right. The night’s winner of the  Giz Award.

Don’t believe me? Breakdown of my “dps” from the same fight.

I have no shame in my Giz moments. We all do it. So I realized it as soon as we pulled and I was doing about 2k dps. I’m all.. what the…? Quick peek at my gear and oh shit.

Me: Um, guys I kinda forgot to put my feral gear on

Yakk: /facepalm

Someone in the raid: At least equip your weapon?

Me: Oh I can do that? Schwingggg!

Me: So uh.. should I heal in feral spec/resto gear or dps in feral spec/resto gear

Yakk: Just dps and don’t die

So to be fair, I really shouldn’t win the Giz Award since I didn’t cause us to wipe. Maybe just an honorable mention? 🙂

Are We There Yet?

March 12, 2012 3 comments

No? How about now? Are we there yet? But I’m BOREDDDDD! There’s nothing to DO!!!!! Are we there yet??! How about now??

I’m leveling Archeology. I’m still pursuing Loremaster. I’ve been going after nerdpoints. I’ve been fishing. I’m blogging again. I’m patiently waiting for the expansion announcements scheduled for this week. Soon as the beta opens I’m there, and will be creating a MT mirror guild for my guildies that are also playing in the beta.

It’s not just my boredom. It’s everyone’s. People are dropping like flies that just inhaled a can of Raid. Recruiting at this time in an expansion is just not worth the time or effort. We no longer have 30 consistent raiders to fill 3 groups. We do however have about 25 consistent raiders. If I had a nickel for every time “hey we should just do 25s” crossed my mind during this expansion, I would afford to give a 1 month game card to every inactive player in the guild. If I had a dime for every time “let’s just condense to 2 groups” has been brought up, I could pay off my student loan.

Easier said than done, on both accounts.

25 man raiding pros:

  1. Nobody gets left out
  2. It brings everyone together
  3. Making a mistake isn’t as costly in 25 as in 10

25 man raiding cons:

  1. Ever try to herd a pack of feral kittens?
  2. Scheduling nightmare. I don’t think there are 2 days in the week where all 25 people are available.
  3. Bigger strain on system resources
  4. Nobody wants to lead it
  5. Not enough people want to do it

2×10 pros:

  1. Can be pickier with group selection
  2. Piggybacking off #1, better chance of progression with a bigger pool of raiders
  3. Boss Lady doesn’t have to scramble to find replacements if someone can’t make a raid
  4. Boss Lady can stop beating her head against the wall recruiting for open spots
  5. The groups would be a lot more solid and consistent
  6. Temporary fix until MOP comes out and inactive players come back

2×10 cons:

  1. It sucks big fat hairy tauren balls for those that get left out
  2. Too many players would get left out
  3. Boss Lady gets blamed for who gets left out
  4. Players stuck on the bench get all grumpy and decide to find a guild they CAN raid with
  5. Boss Lady has to recruit again

Dear Blizzard, please adjust raid sizes from 25-man to 15-man. Thank you.

Destroyer’s End

February 6, 2012 2 comments

I will say the nerf made me a little sad. Lot less incoming damage turned Kykki into a dps berserking tree! Shhh don’t tell Yakk. Nope that wasn’t MY moonfire and wrath you saw… /whistles.

o wait…

So anyway! We had a mulligan on the first attempt… elementium bolt derp on the first platform. Second attempt.. lalala pew pew pew… jump to the 4th  platform and weeeee Emor go splat. We blame Thrall for not giving him a windy buff. So I say “let’s carry on! we can 2 heal this shizzle now!” Elementium bolt hits and… splat. Ok then. Emor I will never underestimate your awesomeness again. Carry on! 3rd attempt..everything’s going well and splat on 4th platform Cataclysm. Not one attempt into phase 2 but we totally got this!!

Fourth time’s the charm. With the NOFUCKINGDAMAGE that the raid is taking now… I was a little bored. Sure we could use a little oomph. So I popped into tree form, hit my berserk racial and wrath’d some tentacles! weeee! And is it me or… was my mana bar almost totally full the whole time? Da fuck? One innervate total. Across all 4 attempts. I mean I got some upgrades but holy shit. And Mav was totally on top of Mana tide but still… I just replaced my Jar of Ancient Remedies (359 trinket off Maloriak in BWD) with the super hawt Heart of Madness, and I was afraid… afraid that I would need to click my mana jar and it’s no longer there. I’m going to keep it for posterity anyway, as a reminder of how simply awesome that trinket was to me for 3 tiers. /tear

Yeah! Dead Dragon! we win! Titles for all!!

So now what…?

The Root of All Evil

January 26, 2012 7 comments

In real life it’s money. In World of Warcraft, it’s shiny purple pixels. MT has 31 active raiders, each of whom have multiple alts. Add another 5-10 social members who occasionally fill in. Add another 7-10 who are playing swotr. For a game that hasn’t seen the likes of 40-man raiding since 2006, That’s a lot of people. With that many people, there is going to be a personality clash, or a disagreement, or a total of 10 pages across 2 threads in our forums of a healthy debate about loot.

MT’s loot policy is about as clear as it can get, for the most part. There is always going to be something weird that comes up to muddy the waters. That’s where it’s left up to the Raid Leader/Loot Master’s discretion. There’s also going to be someone who disagrees with the loot policy. No system is infallible, and as the leader of a raiding guild, it was my job to come up with the best policy for our raiders. My motto is that I can’t please everyone all the time but I can piss off everyone all at once. Greater Good of the Guild.

My philosophy on loot distribution is simple: a drop needs to be distributed in the best way to help the guild progress. With this philosophy, raiders put the needs of the guild ahead of what they want personally. For the two years MT has been in existence, this has worked very well. I have built our loot policy around this philosophy. After all, what good is it if one person gets completely geared out? They’re not soloing any raid bosses at the current tier level. They just look pretty. That person would see we’re not progressing, so he’ll likely leave in search of better loot. And take all the guild loot he won with him. Well gee, that doesn’t help us now does it?

With this philosophy, you would think that we would have a Loot Council system. In theory, I think this would work really really well for us. Our members have a lot of trust in leadership that we will do the right thing. In practice though, I could see problems. There’s the potential for needing to justify every decision. There’s the potential for someone being held accountable/blamed/yelled at because someone may not agree with the decision. There’s the potential for drama. This is what happened to <Blood Red Skies>. That’s how I inherited Guild Leadership. Over Loot Council Drama.Yuck.

You know why our current system works? Because we do use loot council, even though we officially don’t. Everyone is loot counseling each other. Something drops, people roll. The rollers are inspecting each other. “Damn you’re still rocking those troll shoulders?? Give it to that foo!” The only “enforcement” that goes on is if someone already won something that night, it goes to the next highest roller. I recruit players and raiders that agree with MT’s Guild > Individual philosophy. That’s why it works so well.

Those 10 or so pages of loot discussion on our forums was healthy. It was healthy because it was civil, no trolling, flaming or rotten fruit was thrown. No rage quits, no ninja transfers in the middle of the night. We’re all adults, and we were all able to act like adults. It made us take a look at our system to see if it was flawed enough to consider changing it. It made me take a look at what’s written in our policy to see if I needed to clarify anything. That policy has been tweaked and updated as the guild needs arose. In the end, what we have is what works.

Dragon Still Gonna Die

January 24, 2012 Leave a comment

So we got Deathwing to … what… 8%?

Then… RAWRRRRRRRRR he got all pissed off turned big and red and killed us.

After 2 hours we made significant progress. We went from wiping on platform 3, to wiping on platform 4 to P2 enrage. Rotating healing CDs on the 4th platform and P2 is fun.. and insane…and intense… and ZOMGDONTDIE!!! Star really needs to heal that on her shaman. She doesn’t know the meaning of healer panic until that.  She just might cry … hehe  I’m so mean….

❤ Star I need to make a post just for you!

Then we blood lusted to get into Phase 2. That’s when he enraged and ate our faces. We still had a ways to go.. about 11mil health more to go. Arg.

Our dps isn’t far off at all. We have the execution. Some attempts our dps was right on pace. The heals were excellent. Even I was happy with my heals lol. Next week we should get closer. If not, the 5% nerf will push us into the kill.

Dragon Gonna Die

January 17, 2012 Leave a comment

Dragon gonna die 3 times! Eventually…

I think the group shakeups and fresh meat are working well. I’m most impressed by Team Kiss My Ass that runs on Sun/Mon. That group lost half its raid members over the holiday break. So with some switching around, new members and an alt filler or two, we have had our best runs yet clearing 6 bosses in under 2 hours. That gives us time to kill a dragon! Over the last 2 weeks we’ve become more efficient with Spine – getting it in 6 attempts last week and just 4 attempts this week. I have to give mad kudos to Yakk and being able to lead this group even with so many changes.

I’m also impressed by what the other two groups have done this week. These were groups struggling on pingpong and oozes that are now clearing the first 4 bosses with ease. Team Bite Me made it through Ultraxion and Team Pwn Stars will get him down soon enough. Having 3 fillers plus getting Giz’d hurt them on Ultra this week.

(<3 Gizmo)

I am very proud of MT’s progress this expansion. The fact that we only raid between 4-5 hours/week per group, and clearing as much as we do shows that we are an efficient guild. If we had more hours we would have had Madness down.. but then what? I don’t mind that we’re not 8/8 yet. It gives us something to do before the Panda invasion.
